Face masks aren't a sure bet against swine flu

Though sales have increased worldwide, the coverings weren't designed to protect wearers from an airborne virus. Health officials say their value is limited, at best.
By Shari Roan and Rong-Gong Lin II
May 1, 2009
Don't count on those disposable masks to protect you against swine flu.

Residents of Mexico City, as well as travelers to and from Los Angeles, have turned to mouth and nose protection of one type or another in recent days in an attempt to stop errant airborne viruses from entering their respiratory tract.

3M, a major producer of face masks and respirators, said that worldwide sales have increased significantly, and some Los Angeles pharmacies have reported selling out of masks. In the drugstore at Tokyo's Narita International Airport on Monday, mask sales were up 30%. Even recent 99 Cents Only Stores ads touted the devices' potential to "Prevent the flu!"

Get the whole story on >>> face mask <<< and how safe they really are.

Eliza Dushku is Dollhouse Actress

The most searched word on Google is usually related to pop culture: A new video game, a movie star or a pop princess.

At this very moment Eliza Dushku is the most searched for name on Google, she is the star in the upcoming movie "DollHouse"

The show will premiere Friday, February 13 on FOX.
She is part of an underground group whose memories get erased after each secret assignment.

Eliza plays Echo, a woman who lives as a doll for an illegal organization that wipes out the personalities of their dolls and rents them out to their customers, after imprinting the dolls with whatever personality the customer desires.

She was co-star along with Alan Rickman, Bill Pullman, Chris Pine and Rachel Taylor in Bottle Shock, a drama about Napa valley wine. The movie is directed by Randall Miller, who helmed Nobel Son. On August 26, 2007, Dushku signed a development deal with Fox Broadcasting and 20th Century Fox. Under the pact, the network and the studio will develop projects tailor-made for the actress. They also will approach her with existing pitches and scripts.

It was announced on October 31 that Dushku had lured Joss Whedon, famous for creating the Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Firefly series, back to TV, as they agreed to create a new show called Dollhouse. Dushku will play the main character 'Echo' and serve as a producer on the show, which will air on Fox during the 2008-09 TV Season. In an interview, Dushku talked about how Dollhouse, and her reconnection with Whedon came about:
“ I invited Joss Whedon to lunch after I did the business deal and decided that Fox, we'd had a cool relationship in the past and I wanted to do something else and I wanted to get back into a television show. I had him on the brain for sure but I hadn't called him yet, but I sort of took a leap of faith and set things up with Fox and then called Joss. We went to a four-hour lunch where I just sort of used my womanly wiles. No, we've become such good friends, kind of like brother and sister and kind of like he was my watcher, my handler from when I first moved out to L.A. when I was 17 and I was a little bit of a wild child. He's watched me and helped me and taught me over the years. I told him how bad I wanted and needed him back and he accepted and here we are. ”

Personal life

Dushku currently resides in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, California.

She has stated that she dated Major League Baseball player Brad Penny.

In late 2008, Dushku broke up with Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane; she is currently dating Los Angeles party promoter and DJ Brent Bolthouse.

Dushku is the CEO of her production company Boston Diva and serves as a producer on her yet-to-be-released Fox sci-fi series, Dollhouse. She is an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.

Throughout her career, Dushku had refused to appear in nude scenes, saying that people have "a better chance of seeing God than seeing me naked."

Eliza will basically be playing a new character each week, ranging from a cold-hearted assassin to a very expensive wedding date. Whether Dollhouse becomes a cult-classic or another Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer is all up to her acting ability.

Good luck to her.

Rosie Ruiz Vivas ~ Marathon runner

Rosie Ruiz Vivas
(born 1953, Havana, Cuba) is an infamous Cuban American
Marathon runner who on April 21, 1980 ostensibly came in as the first place
female competitor in the 84th Boston Marathon, but who was later stripped of her
title when it was found that she had cheated.

The race

Ruiz completed the marathon with a record time of 2:31:56. However, race
officials determined that she had not completed the entire 26.2-mile course, but
had registered for the race and later jumped in from the crowd and sprinted to
the finish.

There was suspicion from the beginning, as no one had seen her running earlier
in the race, she did not appear in videotape footage, and some members of the
crowd reported witnessing her run into the race in the last mile. In addition,
her time of 2:31:56 was an unusual improvement, more than 25 minutes ahead of
her reported time in the New York City Marathon six months earlier. When asked
by a reporter why she didn't seem fatigued after the grueling race, she said, "I
got up with a lot of energy this morning." Soon, race officials learned that
Ruiz had possibly cheated in the New York marathon in order to qualify for the
Boston Marathon.

Freelance photographer Susan Morrow reported meeting her on the subway during
the New York race and accompanying her from the subway to the race. She lost
touch with Ruiz after that, but came forward when the news of Ruiz's dubious
Boston win broke. According to Morrow, she met Ruiz on the subway and together
they walked a distance to the finishing area, where Ruiz identified herself as
an injured runner. She was escorted to a first aid station and volunteers marked
her down as having completed the marathon, thus qualifying her for the Boston
Marathon.

Eventually, race officials decided to strip Ruiz of her Boston Marathon title
and named Jacqueline Gareau of Montreal, Canada the women's winner, with a time
of 2:34:28.

New York Marathon director Fred Lebow had rescinded Ruiz's 1979 finish earlier
that week, determining that Ruiz had not completed her first marathon, either.

Aftermath

Jacqueline Gareau was awarded a winner's medal at a press conference over a week
after the marathon. Her medal was bigger than the one that Ruiz had originally
received, equal in size to the larger men's medal. (Since the 1980 race, women
and men have been awarded medals equal in size.) In 2005, Gareau served as Grand
Marshal of the Boston Marathon, and in a special ceremony was allowed to
recreate her finish and break the tape.

As a result of the scandal, the Boston Marathon and several other races
instituted a number of safeguards against cheating that are still used today.
These include extensive video surveillance and the transponder timing RFID
system that monitors electronically when runners arrive at various checkpoints
on the course. These techniques have been used to identify other would-be
cheaters, notably "Jean's Marines", a group of charity runners who were caught
cutting the course during the 2005 Marine Corps Marathon.

Barak Obama and The Economy

One of the keywords that has been way up on Google search
leader board is the word "Stimulus"

Some of the questions that keep popping up.

Are we headed in the right direction?

Will the stimulus do the trick and give a long
lasting boost to the economy or will it be short lived?

Is there going to be funds for the school systems.

Are we stepping into this plan too fast, without really studying the consequences?

There is no support at all coming from the Republicans,
apparently the attempt to reach across party lines is not
working very good.
They must have a reason for not giving full support.

Seems to be a lot of wheeling and dealing going on "Politics As Usual" I Guess. construction.

Google reports that Skylar DeLeon was the most searched key word on their site today. It seems that a lot of people were really interested in hearing what a 3 time convicted mureder had to say.

We also love the upcoming show Dancing with the stars, we seldom miss it.

Reading the news I am learning who some of the stars are that will be competing on the next show. The 8th season cast is supposed to be announced this coming Sunday, but a few names were recently leaked. Steve-O aka Stephen Glover, model/actress Denise Richard and Country singer Jewel Kilcher.

The announcement of the cast is scheduled to be aired on ABC at 8 pm Eastern, The show itself will premier on March the 9th on ABC at 8 pm Eastern

Mickey Mouse Club & Annette Funicello

In memory of Annette,

I remember well, when I used to run home to watch the Mickey Mouse Club as it came on TV at 4PM, I was in the 3rd grade and school let out at 3:30 PM, always seemed to make it just on time.

I followed Annette for years after my craze for Mickey Mouse ended, I would occasionally see her in another show or on the news.

Gabby

I was just informed that Anette is still alive, my grave mistake for thinking she was, it was her very close friend that passed on. My Bad

Cheryl Holdridge, a popular Mouseketeer on “The Mickey Mouse Club” TV show in the 1950s, has died. She was 64. She was a Mouseketeer in late 50's at the start of the second season of “The Mickey Mouse Club,” which featured 24 young singers and dancers

Macworld Expo to reveal 17-inch Macbook Pro, Mac Mini

A reliable insider source working at the 2009 Macworld Expo is telling me that Apple WILL be revealing a 17-inch Macbook Pro laptop with a thinner, internal battery that may last 2 hours longer. While battery time is not confirmed from the source, he tells me the battery and upgraded screen size rumors are indeed true.

The source went further to say that the iPhone Nano 3G will not be revealed, debunking the rumors of a smaller iPhone 3G, at least for now.

Furthermore, the source said an updated aluminum Mac Mini will also be revealed. Technical specifications and prices on this and the 17-inch Macbook Pro are not known since everything is currently under lock and key.

You read it hear first! Stay tuned. I’ll keep working the source for more info. Leave a comment here for info or hit me up on my Twitter account.

A Beginner's Guide to the Different eBay Auction Types.

A Beginner's Guide to the Different eBay Auction Types.

Over the years, eBay has introduced all sorts of different auction types, in an effort to give people more options when they buy and sell their things on eBay.

For every seller who doesn't like the idea that their item might sell for a far lower price than they intend, there's another who wants to shift hundreds of the same item quickly. eBay tries to cater to all tastes. This email gives you an overview of the different kinds of auctions and their advantages for you.

Normal Auctions.

These are the bread-and-butter of eBay, the auctions everyone knows: buyers bid, others outbid them, they bid again, and the winner gets the item. Simple.

Reserve Auctions.

Reserve auctions are for sellers who don't want their items to sell for less than a certain price - a concept you'll know about if you're familiar with real auctions. They work just like normal auctions on eBay, except that the buyer will be told if their bid does not meet the reserve price you set, and they'll need to bid again if they want the item. If no-one is willing to meet your price, then the auction is cancelled, and you keep the item.

Fixed Price ('Buy it Now') Auctions.

Buy it Now auctions can work in one of two ways. You can add a Buy it Now button to a normal auction, meaning that buyers can choose either to bid normally or to simply pay the asking price and avoid the whole bidding process. Some sellers, though, now cut out the auction process altogether and simply list all their items at fixed price. This lets you avoid all the complications of the auction format and simply list your items for how much you want them to sell for.

Recently, eBay added a twist to fixed price auctions: the 'best offer'. This means that buyers can contact you to negotiate a price, which could be a good way to get sell some extra stock at a small discount. The only downside to reserve and fixed price auctions is that you pay a small extra fee to use these formats. In general, it is more worth using reserve auctions for higher-priced items and fixed price auctions for lower-priced ones - but remember that you can combine the two formats.

Multiple Item ('Dutch') Auctions.

These are auctions where you can sell more than one of a certain item. Dutch auctions can be done by bidding. Buyers bid a price and say how many items they want, and then everyone pays the lowest price that was bid by one of the winning bidders. If you have trouble getting your head around that, then don't worry - everyone else does too! These auctions are very rare.

What is more common is when a seller has a lot of one item, and lists it using a combination of two auction types: a multiple-item fixed price auction. This just means that you can just say how many of the item you they have, and offer them at a fixed price per unit. Buyers can enter how many they want and then just click Buy it Now to get them.

Now that you know about the different types of auctions, you should make sure that the items you plan to sell don't violate eBay's listing policies.

What You Need to Know BEFORE You Get Started on eBay.

Getting Started on eBay.

So you've decided that you want to get started as a seller on eBay. There are a few things that you really need to know before you go and throw yourself in at the deep end.

What to Sell.

First off, you need to know what it is you're going to sell: what's your speciality? You'll do far better on eBay if you become a great source for certain kind of products, as people who are interested in those products will come back to you again and again. You won't get any loyalty or real reputation if you just sell rubbish at random.

When you think about what to sell, there are a few things to consider. The most important of these is to always sell what you know. If you try to sell something that you just don't know anything about then you'll never write a good description and sell it for a good price.

You might think you're not especially interested in anything, but if you think about what kind of things you usually buy and which websites you go to most often, I'm sure you'll discover some kind of interest. If all else fails mention it to your friends and family: they'll almost certainly say "Oh, well why don't you sell…", and you'll slap your forehead.

Out of the things you know enough about, you should then consider which things you could actually get for a good enough price to resell, and how suitable they would be for posting. If you can think of something of that you're knowledgeable about and it's small and light enough for postage to be relatively cheap, then that's great!

Don't worry if you think the thing you're selling is too obscure - it isn't. There's a market for almost everything on eBay, even things that wouldn't sell once in a year if you stocked them in a shop. You'll probably do even better if you fill a niche than if you sell something common.

Tax and Legal Matters.

If you earn enough money, you should be aware that you're going to have to start paying tax - this won't be done for you. If you decide to sell on eBay on a full-time basis, you should probably register as a business.

Prepare Yourself.

There are going to be ups and downs when you sell on eBay. Don't pack it in if something goes a little wrong in your first few sales: the sellers who are successful on eBay are the ones who enjoy it, and stick at it whatever happens.

Anyone can sell on eBay, if they believe in themselves - and if you do decide it's not for you, then the start-up costs are so low that you won't really have lost anything.

If you're ready to start selling, then the next thing you need to know is the different auction types, so you can decide which ones you will use to sell your items.

No experience necessary!

You can make money in your spare time anywhere! Be the business owner you have always wanted to be.
